A 23-year-old male kayaker with severe hypothermia was rescued from the Ottawa River Tuesday afternoon after he capsized.

Paramedics were called to Crystal Bay, west of the Nepean Sailing Club, at 2:40 p.m. to help the man, who is in stable condition at hospital.

The man entered the river on the Quebec side before his kayak took on water and flipped. He drifted in the strong current for about two hours before being spotted by a driver on the Ontario side who called 911.

Two men in a canoe helped in the rescue before Ottawa fire fighters arrived and brought the kayaker to shore.

The man was wearing a personal flotation device. Paramedics were able to increase his internal body temperature before going to hospital.
