Traffic returns to Wellington Street as Tamil protest continues

Updated: Thu Apr. 09 2009 4:49:20 PM

ctvottawa.ca

Wellington Street was re-opened to vehicle traffic in downtown Ottawa Thursday afternoon after hundreds of Tamil protesters moved to the sidewalks on the third day of their rally near Parliament Hill.

The group left the road itself on their own volition in response to frustrated drivers and commuters, according to CTV Ottawa's Vanessa Lee.

Wellington had been closed in both directions between Elgin and O'Connor streets. Metcalfe Street was also re-opened at Queen Street after a brief closure.

Citing their democratic rights, the crowd showed few signs of relenting in their demand for the Canadian government to promote a ceasefire in Sri Lanka's bloody civil war. Tensions ran high with police after a dump truck removed many of the protesters' belongings, including tents, banners, and food.

"My friends and family are bombed, shelled, murdered, killed, raped," said one participant.

At least four protesters are also engaged in a hunger strike.

Police officers have positioned themselves around the perimeter of the protest to prevent further road closures.

"It's a balance. All groups have a right to demonstrate as long as they stay within the laws of the land and stay peaceful," said Ottawa Police Const. Const. J.P. Vincelette.

"This is the case and our role is to ensure their safety and the public's safety at the same time."

Westbound OC Transpo and STO buses are currently being detoured to Albert Street, while eastbound routes are being detoured to Slater Street.

A similar protest caused traffic snarls along Wellington and Elgin streets near Parliament Hill on Tuesday and Wednesday -- leaving many commuters frustrated.

"While I'm sympathetic, I really resent them taking over our streets like this, anyone taking over our streets," said one Ottawa resident.

"MPs are out of town for the next two weeks, so I guess it's a waste of time right now for them," said another.

Tamil activists want the Canadian government to intervene in what they call the Sri Lankan government's genocide against the Tamil people in the country's northern and eastern regions.

"My uncle was killed during the air force bombing by Sri Lankan people, and he just had a month-old baby," said Genit Jeyakanthan, a Tamil-Canadian.

"We spoke with my aunt after and she was crying saying how they have nothing left."

"Right now the emotions of a lot of the Tamil-Canadians here in Canada are running on high . . . this is the first time it's actually got to the point where we've disobeyed law," Tamil youth activist Sahab Jesuthasan told CTV Ottawa during an earlier rally on Parliament Hill.

"If the Tamils get eradicated in Sri Lanka, we won't have a homeland or culture to call our own," he said.

The United Nations estimates up to 190,000 people are trapped in the war zone, with dozens dying every day.

Jesuthasan says his group wants the Canadian government to send a representative to Sri Lanka to address the issue.

"We want Canada . . . to be the forefront to call the ceasefire. We want Canada to also place economic sanctions on Sri Lanka and also to extradite the Sri Lanka military from the Tamil homeland and give Tamils the right to self-determination."

"We will continue to be here protesting until the government takes some sort of action, or until we're forced to leave."

The rebels have fought since 1983 to create an independent homeland for ethnic minority Tamils, who have faced decades of marginalization by successive governments controlled by ethnic Sinhalese. More than 70,000 people have been killed in the violence.

Government forces in Sri Lanka have been saying for months they are in a final push to defeat the rebels and end the war after a string of major victories in which the rebel administrative capital and main bases were captured.

Thank you Tamil separatist protesters, I greatly appreciate the transit nightmare you caused me over the past few days. My sympathy for your cause has sunk to ZERO because you act like terrorists. Blocking our streets and preventing the flow of traffic is nothing sort of aggression towards Ottawans and it should not be allowed. I hope the government learns quickly to prevent this behavior by radicals, before a trend develops and three hour bus delays become a regular occurrence. Take your cause to parliament hill, on the front lawn is where you should be if protesting, get that through your thick sculls. Then maybe I would respect your cause and call my MP or something.

Unacceptable!

dwayne-ottawa
Hey guys parliment is shutdown for easter nobody is in that building that you are protesting in. Nobody will hear your crys, their all at home in their ridings.
Note to all future protesters check the parlimentry calander.

fed up with whining
enough already. immigrants are welcomed into this country and given welfare, healthcare, whatever they need, and should not burden this country on top of that with the task of fixing problems in their homeland. we have enough problems here to solve, children living in poverty for example, and enough people marginalized to choke a horse. if you arent happy with the situation over there, go back and try to help fix it. Canada's charity to other nations has been tasked to the brink. stop the whining. and stop the disrupting traffic, you arent winning friends among the locals here in Ottawa whose daily lives you are disrupting by this.

Karthiga from Ottawa
To those of who are upset because your are losing a few hours of your lives stuck in traffic, please understand that those Tamils protesting are doing so because they have forever lost loved ones in the fighting in Sri Lanka. Almost all have members of their families missing and are only trying very hard to bring awareness. Not many know about the ongoing conflict in Sri Lanka as past demonstrations have been quite and not so exuberant but the situation has deteriorated so bad that there won’t be any Tamils left in their own homeland.

This is not a disruption of traffic because of the bus strike or a sporting event but people dying on a mass scale everyday. Tamil mothers, fathers and children being systematically killed, infants with no one to take care of them because their parents were killed in the last bombing. As human beings we can not turn a blind eye anymore even if the people dying are oceans away.

As a Canadian, never mind being Tamil, I hope to do my part in supporting human rights and values anywhere in the world by whatever means. To my fellow brothers and sisters in this great country, instead of being apathetical, think that we are all citizens of the world and only when we voice together against injustice can there be a chance for a peaceful world.

liz ottawa
just what exactly do you think the Cdn govt has the power to do, send in our entire army to stop it? get real as Dr Phil says. fight the fights you can win, this is not reasonable or winnable. stop the protesting and disrupting, MPs are not even on Parliament dont you read? you are only pissing off the locals who work downtown and have to deal with the traffic. no support here. you came here, suck it up.

Ganenthiran M
The G20 met in UK, not a single word was spoken about Srilanka or the plight of the civilians there. Everyday HUNDREDS are dying there because of the war. After Iraq, it’s as though the world no longer cares about civilian deaths unless it’s in the thousands (each day). The protesters r not asking for charity. They r asking Canada (as an influential state in the UN) to release a statement demanding an immediate ceasefire (so it can allow the civilians to leave the war zone). With the international community turning a blind eye to the plight of Srilankan tamils, the Srilankan gov. (once the 2nd highest human rights abuser, only succeeded by Iraq) can literally finish its Genocide.

Karthiga from Ottawa
You think a major street is closed.Stores may have to close go bankrupt if this keeps going on for months.

dwayne-ottawa
To Karthiga:

I understand your fight/plight however you dont understand that Canada is a country that does not respond to protests. Nothing will evercome out of any demonstration on the Hill. We have had louder and bigger i remember the protest back in the 80"s when Mulroney brought in the GST. Guess what it is still around the bi-lingual protest in the Tredeau years and its still around. PROTESTS GET NO RESPONSE. You can stand there until xmas and nothing will be done. While your on the hill take a look at the lone abortion protester who has been there every day for over 15 years just sitting there........nothing will ever be done. Your organization has a good concept but a bad delivery. You have very little public support because you are blocking our streets preventing us from free travel making us feel oppressed yet you want help? Dont you think that some of those people you block work for the MP's you want help from?? The Tamil Tigers have been a bad organization since the days of Ida Mein and the Uganda problem. Nothing has been done over that yet and its been 25 years. You should rethink your strategy maybe move your protest to United Nations Headquarters they would help you long before Canada would. Rethink your strategy for maximum results.

L.P. (Ottawa)
I don't have any problem with the protestors, but I do have a problem with them causing traffic delays. Protest, go ahead, you have the right. But causing it to take me an extra half hour to even catch my bus home at the end of my work day, right before Easter?

I'm not listening to you, I'm on my cell phone calling home to say I'll be late and can someone else pick up the groceries we need.

Find a new way to protest that doesn't involve disrupting the lives of people who have nothing to do with your conflict.

i don't understand
What good does it do to disrupt the city? I can't say i "understand" how you feel - i can't possibly - and i do empathize with you. I'm all for demonstrations but you are not garnering support from anyone with your methods.

Baker, Ottawa
To Karthiga

Nice speech. Worthy cause for protest, wrong place.

You are bringing awareness, but you are not winning the hearts or minds of us "apathetic" Canadians.

Help us help you rather than upsetting your countrymen. Find other outlets to complement a protest on the hill where it belongs.

LAC
Quit delaying traffic over something that involves your own government, not the Canadian government. Your don't like it, talk to the Sri Lankan government and if not you know where to go!

Fed up too
I agree with the above except Karthiga, you want something done, then go back to your country and fight for it.
Pissing people off here is not going to get you anything. Disrupting traffic is not getting any sympathy, not from me anyway.
Have a petition sign, right to your mp, like the oc transpo strike, getting everybody mad at them did not help them at all.

Thadsa, Toronto
Thank you CTV for covering our 30+ year old struggles. Today Sri Lanka's war against humanity has killed more people than ever immaginable.

I was at the protest on Wednesday (from TO after giving up work/family responsibitlies), I was only dissapointed with some local citizen's level of ignorance and understanding for basic human needs.

Plus, Ottawa citizens were warned about such protest days and hours before it began!!! So why the surprise and frustration for a large-scale cause?

Cory S
It is unfortunate what is happening over in Sri Lanka to some of your loved ones. However, we do not care if you have lost loved ones or not. It is not our problem. It has nothig to do with the fine citizens of this beautiful city. If you don't like what is happening, go back home and protest. You really think they would listen to the Canadian Gov't if we said stop? Of course they wouldn't. You are LUCKY to be in our country first of all, second of all, you are gaining no sympathy what so ever by causing these types of ridiculous delays for hard working people trying to get home after a long days work. You are going to cause a riot soon. Stop doing this!!

Judith
Here 's a challenge for the ones who agree with the protestors the way they disrupt day to day commuting and businness for Ottawa; go in their country and do the same. Within minutes you're dead.

Jason in Ottawa
I still don't get how making the lives of the citizens of Ottawa miserable will help Tamils anymore than holding a legal protest on the grass in front of Parliament.

And for those of you who are telling us stranded commuters to get over it and accept the inconvenience as minor compared to the plight of the Tamils, I say tell that to my 2 year old daughter who is waiting at daycare for daddy to pick her up. We aren't talking about a couple minute delay here, we are talking HOURS!

Sutha Subra
If you feel guilty of not doing enough to prevent the genocide in Darfur (2003), genocide in Rwanda (1994), and the Holocaust (1940s), then this is your chance to stop the genocide against Tamils in Sri Lanka. Please join the Canadian Tamils rallying at the Parliament Hill to save the Tamils in Sri Lanka.

This rally is not about bus scheduling or pay raise, this is about humanity.
"Better to light one small candle than to curse the darkness"

chris
Enough of the whining.. If you want to fight with the rebels then go back to Sri lanka.. If you want to live here then start becoming a canadian.. You have no sympathy from me

What if all of the people who have been inconvenienced during the course of the demos decided to engage the protestors on the Hill. There would be name-calling, potential violence, and general ill-will. ONL THEN would the paddy wagons show up, and the arrests begin - for the most part of Ottawa citizens.

All in response to a demo that is having no impact whatsoever on the decision makers in town, because they are for the most part back in their constituencies.

Because Canada understands the situation in your homeland and the terrible circumstances you were facing we opened our doors to welcome you to get you away from the civil war that is tearing your country apart. To give you freedom from pain and suffering and this is the way you repay us by holding a major street in the capital of the country hostage

Liz
Fed up with whining ... touche, I agree with you 100%!

go to un
to Thadsa Toronto, I dont know, I think Ottawans got pretty sick of traffic disruption during the recent transit strike which went on from Dec 10 to Feb 15. so dont expect sympathy for your cause. go to the UN. Canada has no say in this. you are fortunate to have been able to come to this great country, stop trying to throw your weight around and abuse the gift you have been given. Parliament out for Easter isnt it, what have you proven to MPs? just because the PM issued a statement about Afghanistan doesnt open the door for this. go to the UN if you really want to make a difference. let us cnds just be. we earned the right to be here by having been born here, you were granted it by a benevolent immigration dept and in my view it is being way too benevolent with this kind of crap going on. if immigrants are just going to be disruptive maybe we shouldnt let so many of them in????

shiyana
I know that Tamils are causing alot of disruption to your daily lives but can you imagine justing sitting home waiting for phone calls of whether your family back home is dead or alive. Thats what is happening. Do you really believe that we want to go and protest and cause disruption. We have no chioce. Mps, and other government officials along with UN members are constently bombarded with e-mails and phone calls. However the situation in Sri Lanka only grows worst especially as illegal war weapons are using. We are sorry but we are desperate. This cause a three hour delay for you but those innocent lives are lost forever, please try to understand.

fed up too
If you people are so keen on being heard, why dont you go back to your country and fight for what you believe.
I am canadian and I dont believe in violence, and disruption. And to hear on the 6:00 news what i just heard, no sympathy from me at all, we dont need this, I dont need my live disrupted for something that is not my problem.
And for the one from Toronto that said we from Ottawa were warned, where the hell do you get your info, gee i dont know nobody call me at work to tell me, when did I find out, is when I arrived at the rideau centre and saw no buses and cop cars all over. I finish at 3:30, my first of only two buses arrives at 4:45 and guess what i had to call someone to pick me up. or else I dont get home at 7 pm or later. Ok, one day I would have forgotten about it, but three days after 2 months of my live being disrupted by Oc Transpo, doesnt work for me. Have people sign a petition if you want to protest, I probably would have sign it , do that now, no way. YOU need to know how to come across to people, disruption the way you did it doesnt work, as you can see on this blog.

Daya (Ottawa)
After 30 years of war, the Sri Lankan government is on the verge of eliminating LTTE, which has brought nothing but immense suffering to the people of Sri Lanka.

The LTTE is the most ruthless terrorist outfit in the world that has pioneered suicide bombing. Their high profile political assassinations include former prime minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi, as well as former Sri Lankan Prime Minister, R. Premadasa. Also they have carried out hundreds of bomb blasts and killings that had taken the lives of thousands of civilians; Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims.

There is no use of talking about a cease fire now because LTTE itself is almost ceased to exist. Currently the LTTE is being cornered by the government forces into a tiny area about 20 square km. in northern Sri Lanka. What the LTTE is doing now is using innocent civilians as a human shield to protect themselves from the attacks by the Sri Lankan armed forces.

If anyone wants the Canadian government to intervene in order to force Sri Lankan government to agree to a ceasefire, there is no doubt that they are trying to throw a lifeline to the Tamil Tigers instead of helping the innocent civilians who are being forcibly held by the LTTE.

If the protesters really want to help the civilians they should ask LTTE to release civilians and not to use them as human shields in the no fire zone in northern Sri Lanka, without causing disturbances to the lives of the civilians in this great beautiful city of Ottawa.

David in Cornwall
You are Canadians now. Not Tamil-Canadians. I only know what I read and what I have read is that the Tamil Tigers are a terrorist organization with female and children suicide bombers. If this is not the case then please inform us all what they are about.

Mario - Ottawa
To everyone on here saying that we don't understand what the Tamils are going through:

No, we don't. This is Canada. Not Sri Lanka. Ergo, not many of us care. That is a truth of the matter. Causing us disturbances in our daily lives, where the "genocide" of Tamils has nothing to do with us Canadians, will not gain you any support.

I never understand when people supporting one cause/nation protest another cause/nation, neither of which have ANYTHING AT ALL to do with Canadians, protest in Canada. What is the point? Go protest in Sri Lanka!!!

Ruvini (Ottawa)
LTTE=Al Queda = Terrorist

what is some one waves the Al Quaeda flags in the parliament hill (Don't ask Don't tell policy) Canada is double standards towards LTTE (since it's a terrorist organization which affects the south east Asian countries and not the west)

Susan from Ottawa
The streets will no longer be closed. The Tamil people have realized that it was a mistake. They listened to what the commuters have to say. Maybe we should give them a chance and listen to what they have to say.

Paul - Ottawa
I think that all us "Poor Ottawans" that are whiny just because it is taking a little longer to get home should be thankful that you have a home to go to or that these people can even have the right to protest like they are because imagine being in a so called home and safe zone where you can not protest or you will be shot also living in this so called safe zone in fear because there are constant bombings by whatever militant group or government forces so personally I say perhaps leave for work a little earlier. Just my 2 cents worth here.

David Maniella
Theres protests in Oslo, London, Chennai, New York, Washington, Paris and Melbourne.... not just in Ottawa..

I think they are just trying to raise awareness so people become more aware of what is happening, and by causing traffic disruptions they are succeeding.

Inconvenience is a small price to pay for the freedom of speech and the right to speak out and protest.

Ottawa Guy
You people live in Canada now.Become more interest in Canadian affairs such as our problem with Afghanistan, our poor economy and our leadership. You moved here, learn to become a Canadian Citizen. I have roots elsewhere but I care for my Canada. You can't always help whats going on elsewhere. I know. Better your own world before you can help others. That is the key.

Banujan
Dear Canadians Citizen! I'm a Born Canadian and I consider myself a citizen of this country. Although I cannot forget my roots as a Sri Lankan Tamil. My dear Canadian friends, do you understand the current crisis which is happening in our country? Do you know that the cause of all this is pure act of discrimination in our country? If our Canadian Government was acting the same way as the Sri Lankan government, I believe that you would feel what we are feeling today; our struggle for freedom. Look at what happened to the Jews, they almost got extinct for the fact that they were jews. The same is happening to us for the fact that we are just pure tamils! What did the Canadian Government do? Nothing! I don't know how the government hasn't taken any actions. Millions have already died and many have lost their loved ones! We are trying to prevent this genocide from happening but guess what; it is happening! I lost my family members there! We are small community here. We don't even have a country to live in. Canada is the only place that welcomed us with open heart! I give respect for this country but I can never give up on my origins! It's funny that my tamil people can't even tell people that we have a country. We're all immigrants, refugees, starnded in a country who had help us a lot from those who kicked us out. Our history derives on nightmares; murders, bombings, shellings, gunned down, raped...all atrocity... Please help us...

Katherine in Ottawa
You came to this country to start a new life then start it! I have no sympathy for a group that uses child soldiers, suicide bombers etc. Get off our streets and leave us alone. Take your plight to the Sri Lankan government. This has nothing to do with us and yet you hold Ottawans hostage. Come on Ottawa Police and Larry O'Brien put a stop to this. Why are these people being allowed to block streets? I thought protesting was only allowed on Parliament Hill?

Brian
Having lived in Sri Lanka when it was called Ceylon and made several visits during the past few years I have seen what a tragedy the whole country has become. This still does not detract from the fact that the Tamil Tiger organization is a ruthless and terroist group that have in the past years made no distinction on who the wanted to kill. They have killed and maimed women and children and have refused to negotiate reasonable termw with the Sri Lankan government. The world has labled the Tamil Tigers as the problem in this region and they alone have prevented the Tamil national to live a safe and happy life.

Dian thevathas
DEAR OTTAWA CITIZENS,as a tamil protestor, i kindly apologize for the traffic that we are making in front of the parliment. but im pretty sure that u guys know the value of peoples life. DEATH is a everyday thing with no hopes for tomorrow for those 190 000 Tamils in srilanka. so again, im really sorrry about what we are doing here, but we want the Canadian gouvernment to act ASAP and try to help through UN to stop the genocide which is taking place in sri lanka. and i also want to mention that when we did protests on the sidewalks, no one really cared about them. but now, media and the rest of the canada is getting to know about this problem. thank you for the media. and thank you for the support dear canadians.

Edward Rennault
I would first and foremost like to say that for those who are finding that their regular lives are being inconvenienced by protests should understand that Canada is first and foremost a democratic country. As such groups are entitled the right to hold peaceful protests. Only because of their protests are we even aware of the situation in Canada as the government has censored the media. As a political science student at the University of Toronto I find it disgusting that Canadian's are so quick to throw aside Human Rights and Civil Rights at the first sign of an inconvenience to their day. Canada is a multicultural country and would not be where it is today in the global scheme of things if it weren't for its mosaic approach to immigration. Rather then to complain about your inconveniences you should be thanking these people for coming into our country and contributing to our great nation in order to make it a better place for all people alike. I hate to say it but it is this very racist dogma that underlies most of the comments which I figure to be coming from predominantly Caucasian locals, which is the attitude that they built their nation all on their own and everyone else is just lucky to be a part of it. Understand Canada would not be where it is today if it weren't for these people from not just their investment in our economy but also the revenue from the taxes they pay. So I implore utilize the resources that we have blessed in this great nation of ours to educate yourselves on the big picture prior to speaking on things which you in reality know very little about.

sathi
sorry for a ottawa city people thy have a problems so he helping them

Andy B.
I totally agree with most people who already posted comments.I came to Canada from war torn former Yugoslavia and would never even think of going to protest for something stupid like this.Someone was right in their comments saying that immigrants get literally everything when they come here and they should be grateful for that, not start blocking the streets, enough with that nonsense.People dont realize how good they have it here, this is one of the best countries to live in for immigrants.Just for the record,I would challenge anyone to maybe do some research and find out how immigrants are treated in few other countries (examples Germany or Australia),you will be pleasently surprised (or better shocked),since they dont have even close rights as people who are born here, contrary to Canada where everyone gets exact equal choices. All I will say for the end is that those protesters should go get a life and live us working people alone,or even better go back to their homeland where they came from and protest all the hell they wish or want.

Mohan
I am truly surprised at the tone of most of the posts, like ...

"this is our country, ... go and protest in your country"

In response to this and other similar posts, I say THIS IS MY COUNTRY NOW. Where do you think YOUR ancestors came from? We pay taxes just like you all and we employ Canadians in our businesses!
I see that most of the posts are from people who have no clue as to the incredible statistics of the Tamil Community in Canada.
- Highest percentage based on ethnicity entering Medical, Law, and Engineering programs
- Highest percentage based on ethnicity opening businesses and commercial interests

This is the typical double standard we face with the Western World. Being a conflict in a South Asian country, the coverage and outcry is muted.
The carnage is of several magnitudes greater than what happened in Serbia !

So in closing, my common response to all negative posts criticising this action would be to, GO AND EDUCATE YOURSELVES!

STOP BLOCKING TRAFFIC
I too am a Sri Lankan-Canadian. I did not attend the protest due to your uncivilized behaviours. Blocking traffic, has angered many Ottawa citizens. How would you feel in their shoes? They have children from school to pick up, important appointments to attend, exhausted from a long day of work. And worst of all, you are holding up the LTTE flag...is this the purpose of ur protest? To get the tigers off the banned list? Wait...aren't u trying to free the civilians of Sri Lanka? and like Many Ottawans said...ur protest is of no use at the moment b/c its a holiday right now, and I do believe that the MPs are on break. One last thing, no Ottawans will sympathize with u if u ctn to protest during a holiday. Its the only long-weekend, and people like to enjoy this long weekend, and not necessarily wait for ur protest to be over to go to see loved ones. You are not only getting Ottawans angry but even some of us Sri Lankans for doing this in an uncivilized manner and embarassing us all. Do ur homework and do the protest in an appropriate way, everyone will help.

As a Canadian I strongly support your worthy cause. But, what do you think we Canadians can do atmost? We could try our level best to put the pressure on the Sri Lankan government to halt the genocidal war on Tamil people in Sri Lanka. That's all we can do.

I am working in a software company in Downtown Ottawa. Till I met a young protester who explained me about the Tamils struggle for self determination, I had wrong view about LTTE. I thougth LTTE is a terrorist outfit. But, after I talked to him I came to a conclusion that LTTE is not a terrorist organization and they are fighting for their own people.

What I'm saying is that why don't you continue your protest on the side walks or even on parliament hill grounds. Please don't disturb the traffic, because it will make Ottawa citizens to hate your worthy cause. If you think Canada's ban on LTTE is the reason for the Ceasefire collapsed, then talk to Stephen Harper. Send Petition. Talk to your area MPs. But, blocking busy roads is not going to give you anything.

Sri Lankan Canadian
Being a Sri Lankan Canadian myself.. I am very disappointed in the way this protest is being handled in an utmost uncivilized manner. If you want to protest, go to your homeland and do it. Canadians are not stupid and they do know all the lies you express right now. Everybody knows that everyone part of the LTTE are mostly children and most of the suicide bombers are women. DOn't deny these facts. LTTE have murdered their own tamil people. Maybe Canadian Government have made the greatest mistake of allowing us tamils to come as immigrants. All the tamils, please do not deny that LTTE are not terrorists because they are, and you don't need proof because everybody knows. First put down YOUR arms and then ask for Canada to intervene. Don't fool the Canadian Government. BY PROTESTING WITH THE LTTE FLAG, BY BLOCKING TRAFFIC, YOU WILL NOT GET A RESPONSE..

arthy Toronto,Ontario
I'm a thirteen year old TAMIL-CANADIAN.I was born in this country! If you all care SOOO MUCH about UR CANADA, i don't see all of u going and being apart of the canadian army and going to Afghanistan.I thought my fellow canadians would understand, but you alll are as selfish as Americans. Protesting infront of Parliament Hill is the only thing we CAN DO!! You all are worrying about hours of inconvenience, when minute by minute people are dying in Sri Lanka. Everyone says feel sympathetic for US, but i don't see u guys coming to these protests. Its not just for tamils. If you were HUMAN, you wouldn't WHINE about a few hours and come to these protests. If this were happening in any pther country and they had protests here, i would go TOO. YOU PPL SHUD BE ASHAMED TO CALL URSELFS CANADIAN.

I AM A CANADIAN.

David
Blocking the streets is NOT acceptable. We know Tamils have been protesting for months peacefully. Our Canadian government hasn't done anything to save their people in Srilanka. Now they have taken their protests to the streets. This shows how intense the situation in Srilanka. I have been following the situation in Srilanka. Tamils in Srilanka are being killed by their own government. There is a pure genocide going on there. Our Canadian government has the responsibility to stop the Genocide. Canada can put economic and political pressure on Srilanka to stop its killing of tamils. Canada is home for more than 300,000 tamils and they all have relatives and friends in Srilanka, who are in Danger. We need to understand their feelings. We need to show them our support. Genocide is not acceptable in 21st century.
