Rankin, 46, was found dead of a gunshot wound inside his Morewood home, south of Ottawa. He was shot through a basement window.
Rankin was a frequent contributor to a harness racing website, vowing to publicize corruption. In 2004 he gave evidence to an Ontario Racing Commission probe into race-fixing allegations at Rideau-Carleton Raceway.
Rankin was also a children's entertainer who performed across Eastern Ontario.
