Obama stops to shop in Ottawa's Byward Market

Updated: Fri Feb. 20 2009 10:25:59 AM

ctvottawa.ca

After meeting with the prime minister, U.S. President Barack Obama made a quick stop in Ottawa's Byward Market Thursday where he bought a beaver tail, picked up some cookies from a French bakery and looked for a snow globe to bring back to the White House.

Those who work at the BeaverTail hut in the Byward Market told CTV Ottawa one of Obama's security personnel came up to the hut and asked if one of the employees could serve the president an Obama Tail, a winter treat designed specifically to honour the American president.

Employee Jessica Milien, who was selected because she's a big Obama fan, served Obama his dessert and explained that the Obama Tail is dressed with the classic beaver tail cinnamon and sugar flavour, topped with maple flavoured eyes and a Nutella 'O' for 'Obama.'

"This is the most exciting day of my life," Milean told CTV Ottawa Thursday afternoon.

"We started talking and he was such a down to earth guy, it didn't even feel like I was talking to the president of the United States."

That sentiment was shared by employees who work at Le Moulin de Provence, a local French bakery where the president picked up maple leaf shaped cookies for his daughters, free of charge.

"He walked right in front of us and we asked him if we could have a picture with him, and he said yes. And he shook our hands and he was saying how nice it was to meet us," said employee Isabelle Corriveau. "It was a total surprise."

Earlier in the day, Obama also took a moment to greet about 1,000 onlookers who gathered on the snowy lawn of Parliament Hill to catch a glimpse of the famed American president.

The brief wave from Obama, who was joined by Prime Minister Stephen Harper, was a moment many had been waiting for since early Thursday morning.

"We're so tired, we haven't slept," said Stephanie Scott, a Toronto resident who arrived on the Hill at 4:30 a.m.

Residents from across the country were also joined by some Americans who made the trip to Canada just to see the U.S. president.

"Why do you think I'm here -- it's because I couldn't go (to the inauguration in Washington). I missed him one place, so I'm catching him on the other side," said Rita Bruney of Brooklyn.

Obama's Air Force One jet touched down at the Ottawa International Airport shortly before 10:30 a.m., where he was greeted on the tarmac by Gov. Gen. Michaelle Jean and Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon.

After a short meeting with the Governor General, Obama's motorcade made its way to Parliament Hill, whizzing past thousands of well-wishers who lined the Airport Parkway.

As the president approached the Hill in his bulletproof limo, snipers stood on the rooftops and hung out of helicopters that circled above.

Police presence in many parts of the capital remained strong throughout the day to ensure the president had a safe visit.

Although Obama was scheduled to return to Washington at about 4:30 p.m., his plane didn't take off until about an hour later.

Good choice on getting a beaver tail... that is a genuine Canadian treat!

Even with the traffic backed up, and the fact I couldn't get to Bronson with public transit because it was blocked off - I'm still glad he made a visit that was sort of social and fun. It's good to have a "personable" representative.

I wish I could say the same for our PM. :S

I was pleasently surprised to see that the President did make a few stops for his many fans from Canada and around the world. I am not from Ottawa but only live an hours south and I was excited that he came basically to my backyard in his first international trip. I am proud to be a Canadian at any time but expecially today. We did ourselves proud.

Prime Minister Harper and President Obama supporter. What a great day for all Canadaian/Americans and the world. President Obama is so down to earth, and with his unexpected visit to the By- Way market in Ottawa, just shows you how friendly a man he is. It was a win win situation for CanAm relations and Planet Earth. Derek Sheppard, Cornwall Ontario

Bob in Winnipeg
Iggy gets his 15 minutes of fame with President Obama and what does he do? He brings along his little buddy Bob Rae to sit on his knee so Bob can advise the president on the economy. Gives us all a break, the professor is afraid to meet the president alone because he might ask him a question like we need you to stay the course in Afghanistan will the liberal government stand with America. But by having Rae there Bob can deflect issue by telling stories of how to run things because of his vast knowledge and experience.
( shacking my head sadly)

Obama supporter.
This is a wonderful day for Ottawa. To actually stop at the Byward Market and meet a few "fans" is wonderful. He certainly is an inspiration to us all.

Chris in Kingston
Bob Rae giving advice on the economy is like an arsonist telling you how to prevent fires. Rae messed up Ontario for years, and he'll do the same if Canadians are ever dumb enough to vote in the Liberals while he's around.

Doug Robinson
Could I please have my share of the millions that we wasted on this non-visit!

Oh Bobby in Winnipeg. It is thanks to the Liberals that we finally have some kind of stimulus package to try and help us out of the mess we are in. Even though the Liberals warned of it, it is the mess the conservatives denied during the election campaign. Isn't it strange, that every time Canada gets into an economical mess, it is the conservatives who are in power. Then the Liberals have to come and fix the mess. Maybe now that the conservatives took the advise of the Liberals for the budget maybe now it will not be as bad as it could have been. But let me tell you, just because the conservatives are in charge (if you can call it that), we are still going to be a mess. But do not worry too much Bobby, Iggy will fix it. I can assure you of that.

Duh, yeah, Bob, you got it all figured.
You know all about Dr. Ignatieff cuz you is smarter than he is.

Duh, yeah.

Sidney Man
Last time I checked, we have a Conservative government in Ottawa.

Eric Gisin, loony BC
Where were the protesters? Surely the loony-left must denounce this invasion by imperialist superpower!

Sophie, Gatineau
Oh yeah, this whole thing looks really nice from a distance but speak to any Ottawa commuter who ''tried'' leaving the Ottawa downtown core at rush hour!

The entire downtown core was shut down, there were no buses and we felt like hostages. Commuters couldn't get anywhere (even the Rideau Canal was closed off), could not obtain any information whatsoever and bus routes were supposed to be rerouted but ended up being cancelled instead.

This ''nice'' visit became a nightmare for these commuters. I was happy he was coming but am even more happy he left!!!

wish i was there
Well this was a scheduled stop, no chances would have been taken, but I am thrilled for the people that met him.As for iggy and rae. How do I blow a raspberry.lol

Julius Relampagos
Good to see Mr. Obama in Ottawa, Canada. Those Maple Leaf cookies are great, glad to know Barrack tried them too.

Steve in Ottawa
C'mon guys. This is the best story of the whole trip! Obama is President because he ran circles around his opponents reaching out to the common man, like me and you. He didn't get everyone, but he got enough to win the Presidency of the US, even getting support from those who really don't agree with his policies.

Police were expecting 50,000 on Parliament Hill and about 500 to 900 showed up. It had nothing to do with President Obama; police also warned there would be no chance to see anything but the back of his head as he went in to Parliament so they stayed home to watch the show on TV where they could see him. To then have him go to the Byward market at the end of the trip was a stroke of genius. He did go and meet "the people" and got the photo-ops and stories we are all really interested in.

Eating a Beaver Tail and buying gifts for his daughters is more real than "carbon capture".

dan
Obama is a great man who will do great things.
Too bad he had to meet up with our clowns in parliment hill.
And what about Iggy who is an ex american who brings his sidekick Rae who is an ex N.D.P.
We all know what he did for northern Ontario.

HJ - On.
What a privileged and historic day for Ottawa and Canada! Hail to the Chiefs.

Jim-Surrey
President Obama!

COME BACK SOON SIR!!!

The states needs canada and canada needs the states.

Steve
I am not sure where you heard theyw ere expecting 50,000.There was 2,000 on the hill.Lets not forget up to a few days ago no one was going to be allowed on the hill.

riccardo parente
grow up people-
what is with all the Rae bashing on such a historic day?
can you focus on reality at all?
funny how Rae is widely respected in the rest of Canada and most of the world...
Obama rocks ...changing of the guard and long overdue - now just get rid of Harper and Canada can have some hope too...YES WE CAN

ross
Oh Obama came to Canada, Big deal. I remember seeing a guy leaving a polling station during the federal election shaking his head and muttering to himself how he couldn't vote for Obama. And that sums up most Canadians. What? I thought we were part of the USA? Canada: America's biggest cheerleader.

Jayme
riccardo parente
How would you feel if the goverment here brought in a $800 million dollar package. In the states i think it will do alot of good.In canada its a bit different. Our banks are not as bad as in the states our housing is not as bad and our health care is good.

Kim plus
I love him! He's incredible.
Much Thanks to Obama!

maggie in sudbury
Those Beaver Tails sound very yummy.

I'm in Sudbury. Googled and found the recipe.

All that's needed now is the deep fryer.

And I am very happy those who got to meet or even a glimpse of Mr. Obama, their day was made.

To me, he seems to be a very honest person.

Thanks for reading this.

Allan
Bob in Winnipeg shows how frightened the Conservatives are. Instead of focusing on the trip, he has to take cheap shots at the Liberals. Remember, the reason Canadians aren't facing the economic hell the US is is because back in the 90s Martin and Chretien said no to Canadian bankers who asked for de-regulation so they could compete with the Americans. Thank gawd for Liberal economic policies!

Jesse R
He should come to Vancouver to see what a real beautiful canadian city looks like!

Liz
President Obama is a class act, sophisticated and refined compared to the dull and tactless Harper!

reidjr
Jesse
Ottawa is real and is very nice.

Miranda H. (Proud in Ottawa)
There is just something about the energy that this man brings, the fact that he's educated, knows and understands the issues beyond his own borders, appears to be thoughtful and inclusive, and now, seems to also be a bit mischievious (wonder how much Secret Service adrenalin was pumping yesterday on the unplanned walk-through!?)

What a breath of fresh air from his predecessor!

And Jesse R - been to Vancouver several times, and although beautiful, these days, Ottawa is BOTH clean and safe so the Presidential visit was well placed.
