Several rescued animals are dead after a fire ripped through an animal rescue agency in southeast Ottawa on Thursday.

Although the new year started off with the birth of 11 puppies at the Navan Animal Rescue Corporation, owner Michelle Mayer says things took a tragic turn after the blaze burned the shelter out.

Mayer managed to escape with some of the animals that were taking refuge at the shelter. In all, 17 dogs, one cat and a rabbit perished in the fire.
