The order was a Tim's double-double, a chicken sandwich and, potentially, for dessert a petty theft that veterans are calling despicable.

Just before Remembrance Day, a woman was caught on tape possibly stealing Poppy Box cash from the Tim Horton's at 430 West Hunt Club Rd.

While a staff member was filling her order, the video appeared to show the woman throwing money into her bag and using napkins to cover up.

Bob Harkness of the Royal Canadian Legion brought the surveillance video to Ottawa police.

"We are charities working to help other people," he said. "It's despicable."

No one knows how much money was taken; the box had only been out for about 24 hours. Still, veterans and police say the principle is what counts.

"This is money that's being donated for people in need, and the fact that it's stolen, that sort of adds another edge to the whole crime," said Staff Sgt. Lynne Turnbull, who added the culprit likely knew what she was doing.

"I'm sure somebody will know who that person is. The video quality is very good."

Harkness has his own punishment ideas, though.

"I'd like to see the individual maybe do a couple months of cleaning bedpans at our veterans home, the Perley Rideau Health Centre," he said. "I think it would be good justice."
